Why watch European news channels in English?
American and British channels cover Europe mostly when a story affects their own audience. European channels cover the EU, national elections, energy and migration as everyday news. They also give a non-US view of world events, from Ukraine to the Middle East and Africa.
The three main English-language channels are all backed by European governments or institutions in some way, but they are run as independent newsrooms. Knowing who funds each one helps you put its coverage in context.

Euronews in English
Euronews launched in Lyon in 1993 and announced in 2023 that its main editorial base would move to Brussels. It covers Europe and the world in more than a dozen language editions. The English edition is the one most international viewers watch. Its programs mix short news bulletins with shows on business, climate, science, travel and culture.
Where to watch
- Website and app: The Euronews app for iPhone, iPad and Apple TV includes a 24/7 live stream. There is an Android app too. The developer notes that live TV in English is not offered in some countries, such as Turkey and Singapore, because of rights.
- US streaming services: In 2022 Euronews said its English edition was on Fubo in North America. It also listed earlier partnerships with Pluto TV, Roku, Tubi, Plex and Distro TV. Check each app’s guide, since line-ups change.
- UK and Europe: Euronews says its English feed is carried by pay-TV and IPTV providers in many European countries and in the UK.

France 24 English
France 24 launched in December 2006 and runs four channels: French, English, Arabic and Spanish. It is part of France Médias Monde, which is wholly owned by the French state. The English channel is strong on France, French-speaking Africa and the Middle East.

DW News (Deutsche Welle)
Deutsche Welle is Germany’s international broadcaster. It first went on air in 1953 and is funded from the German federal budget rather than the domestic TV licence fee. Its TV channels are produced in Berlin. DW News is the English-language channel, with deep coverage of Germany, the EU and Eastern Europe.
Where to watch
- Free online: dw.com has a live English stream, and DW News streams on its YouTube channel. DW also offers apps.
- US over the air: Some local stations carry DW on digital subchannels, including in Denver, Orlando, Fresno and San Francisco. Some public stations air DW programs.
- UK: DW left Sky in 2009, so most UK viewers watch online.

Quick guide: European news channels in English in the US vs UK
Where you live changes the best route. This table sums up the official options we could confirm.
| Channel | Best free route in the US | Best free route in the UK |
|---|---|---|
| Euronews English | Euronews app or website; check Pluto TV, Plex and Tubi | Euronews app or website |
| France 24 English | YouTube, Roku channel, or your PBS station’s app | Freeview 255, YouTube or Samsung TV Plus |
| DW News | YouTube or dw.com; local subchannel in some cities | YouTube or dw.com |
Remember that UK viewers need a TV licence to watch any channel live as it airs, including foreign channels streamed online. Watching clips on demand does not need one.
Does state funding affect European news channels in English?
It is a fair question. France 24 and DW are paid for by their governments, and both operate under laws meant to keep editorial decisions independent. Euronews was founded by European public broadcasters and is now mostly owned by a private investment firm. None of this makes a channel unreliable, but it helps to compare coverage across two or more sources on contested stories.
Which European news channels in English should you choose?
There is no wrong answer, and all three are free online. Pick based on the stories you care about most.
Many viewers keep two European news channels in English in rotation for a broader view of the continent.
- You follow EU politics: Euronews has the most coverage of the European Parliament, Commission and summits.
- You follow Africa or the Middle East: France 24 has a large network of correspondents in both regions.
- You follow Germany, Ukraine or Eastern Europe: DW covers these in more depth than other English channels.
- You want long-form explainers: DW and France 24 both post documentaries and explainer videos on YouTube alongside the live channel.
Watching on a TV
The easiest way to get all three on a television is through YouTube or the channels’ own TV apps. Free ad-supported services are another option where they carry the channels. On most smart TVs, Roku players and Fire TV sticks, search the app store for the channel name and install the official app.
Other European news channels in English
A few other broadcasters offer some English-language news, but they are not 24-hour English channels. Many national public broadcasters post English news bulletins or articles online. If you want a view from the region east of the EU, Turkey’s TRT World is a full English channel; see our TRT World guide.
These smaller European news channels in English are worth a look once you know the big three.
Britain’s channels are covered separately in our comparison of BBC, Sky News and GB News.
A note on time zones
Paris and Berlin are six hours ahead of US Eastern time for most of the year, and Brussels and Lyon share the same time zone. Europe’s morning news programs air overnight in the US. Live streams run around the clock, but big studio programs follow European prime time. Check each channel’s own schedule, since programs change.
