What TRT World is
TRT World is a 24-hour English-language news channel. It ran a test broadcast in May 2015 and fully launched on June 30, 2015, replacing the older TRT International service. Its parent, Türkiye Radyo ve Televizyon Kurumu (TRT), is Türkiye’s state-owned public broadcaster.
The channel is based in Istanbul. It also produces programmes from bureaus in London and Washington, D.C. Many of its news bulletins are labeled “News – London” or “NewsHour – London” in the schedule.
Ownership and how it is viewed
TRT states that it is editorially and financially independent of the Turkish government. In 2020, the US Department of Justice took a different view of the Washington operation. It required TRT World’s US office to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), citing government influence over its leadership, budget and content.
The decision drew a response from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. Its media freedom representative said FARA registration has a restrictive effect on media freedom. Readers who want the documents can find the determination letter through the Al-Monitor report on the case.
On the journalism side, TRT World won an International Emmy in 2023 for its documentary Off The Grid, about the war in Ukraine.

The TRT World website
The live player is built into the video section of trtworld.com. It plays the full TV channel, not a cut-down web feed. You do not need to sign in, and there is no paywall.
YouTube
TRT World runs an official YouTube channel at @TRTWorld, with a dedicated live page. YouTube is often the most convenient route on a television, because the app is already on most smart TVs, game consoles and streaming sticks. Check that you are on the verified channel. TRT also runs related channels, such as TRT World Now, that carry shorter clips.
Mobile and TV apps
TRT publishes a TRT World app on the Apple App Store and Google Play, plus a separate version for Android TV. A TRT World app has also been listed in the Amazon Appstore for Fire TV. Search for “TRT World” and make sure the developer is Türkiye Radyo ve Televizyon Kurumu (TRT).
Roku is less clear. Some Roku users reported in 2024 that the TRT World channel had disappeared from the Roku Channel Store. If you cannot find it on your Roku, use the YouTube app instead. Our guide to news channels on Roku lists other options.
Coming soon: the NewsLive streaming app. We’re building one subscription for live international news on Android, Roku, Fire TV and desktop. The service is under development — follow NewsLive for launch updates.
TRT World on TV around the world
TRT World built its TV reach mostly through satellite. In January 2017, TRT said the channel was available in 190 countries, using Türksat plus ten other major broadcast satellites through the distributor Globecast. That same year, SES announced carriage on its Astra satellites at 19.2° East and 28.2° East, covering continental Europe and the UK, and on SES-5 for sub-Saharan Africa.
These satellite deals mean that viewers with a suitable dish in Europe, the Middle East and Africa may find TRT World free to air. Satellite line-ups do change, though. Run a channel scan, or check a current satellite channel list, before buying any equipment.
In the US and the UK, TRT World is not a standard channel on most cable or free-to-air line-ups. Online streaming is usually the most reliable route there. Some local cable and IPTV operators around the world include TRT World in their packages, so ask your provider if you prefer a regular TV channel.
A note on tabii
TRT also runs tabii, an international streaming platform for its drama series, documentaries and children’s shows. It is a separate service from TRT World. Do not expect the live news channel there; use the TRT World website, apps or YouTube for that.
Programmes worth knowing
TRT World mixes hourly news with discussion, business and feature programmes. The TRT World shows page listed these among its current programmes in October 2026.
| Programme | What it covers |
|---|---|
| NewsHour and News (London) | Main international news bulletins |
| Strait Talk | Interviews with policymakers and decision-makers |
| The Newsmakers | Debate on the week’s major stories |
| Roundtable | Panel discussion on social and political topics |
| Money Talks | Business and economics |
| Africa Matters | News and features from across Africa |
| Across The Balkans | Stories from Southeast Europe |
| Inside America | US politics and society |
| Westminster Watch | UK politics |
| The InnerView | Long-form interviews |
For exact times, check the official TV schedule on trtworld.com. Air times move around, and breaking news often replaces scheduled shows. Clips and full episodes of many programmes also appear on YouTube after broadcast.
How TRT World compares with similar channels
TRT World is one of several state-linked or publicly funded international news channels broadcasting in English. Each has a different base, and that shapes which regions get the most attention. The table below compares three of them on the basics.
| Channel | Base | Owner | Free official livestream |
|---|---|---|---|
| TRT World | Istanbul | TRT (Türkiye’s public broadcaster) | Yes |
| Al Jazeera English | Doha | Al Jazeera Media Network (partly funded by Qatar) | Yes |
| DW News | Berlin | Deutsche Welle (Germany’s international broadcaster) | Yes |
If you follow the Middle East, the Balkans or Central Asia, TRT World’s regional shows give a Türkiye-based angle on those stories. Many viewers watch two or three of these channels side by side to compare how each covers the same event.
Getting a good picture
- Prefer official players. The website, apps and verified YouTube channel are free. Unofficial copies often freeze or carry unwanted ads.
- Use a wired connection for HD. On a TV, an Ethernet cable usually gives a steadier stream than Wi-Fi.
- Cast from your phone. If no TRT World app is available on your TV, start the stream on your phone and cast it with Chromecast or AirPlay.
- Convert schedule times. Many TRT World bulletins come from Istanbul and London, which sit in different time zones. Double-check the time zone shown on the schedule page before planning around a show.
- Follow on social media. TRT World posts breaking clips to YouTube, X, Instagram and TikTok if you only want highlights.
