The easiest free C-SPAN live stream is on C-SPAN.org and in the free C-SPAN Now app, which show House and Senate floor sessions, hearings and major political events without any login. To watch the full C-SPAN, C-SPAN2 and C-SPAN3 channels around the clock, you need a pay-TV login, which now includes YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV. Here’s how each option works, as of October 2026.
Key facts (as of October 2026)
- C-SPAN.org and the free C-SPAN Now app stream House and Senate floor debates, hearings and top political events with no login.
- Live streams of all three C-SPAN TV networks are limited to verified cable, satellite or streaming TV customers, at no extra charge.
- YouTube TV added C-SPAN, C-SPAN2 and C-SPAN3 on December 4, 2025, and Hulu + Live TV signed on in the same deal.
What is C-SPAN?
C-SPAN is a nonprofit public affairs network created by the US cable industry to show Congress and government at work, mostly without commentary. It runs three TV channels, each with a clear job:
| Channel | Main focus |
|---|---|
| C-SPAN | The House of Representatives, plus Washington Journal call-in shows |
| C-SPAN2 | The Senate, plus Book TV on weekends |
| C-SPAN3 | Hearings, other public affairs events and American History TV |
Also, the Senate side has a long history: June 2, 2025 marked 39 years of C-SPAN2’s gavel-to-gavel Senate coverage. So if you want to see a vote or a speech in full, C-SPAN is usually the place.
Is there a free C-SPAN live stream?
Yes, though it covers events rather than the full channels. C-SPAN says its website offers live coverage of federal government events without logging in. That includes House and Senate floor debates, committee hearings, executive branch events, court coverage, campaign events and Washington Journal.
First, look for the “Live Online Today” column on the C-SPAN.org home page. On-demand programs such as Book TV and American History TV are free too, along with the large video archive.
The C-SPAN Now app
C-SPAN Now is the network’s free mobile app for iPhone and Android. Without signing in, it streams the House, the Senate and top political events, plus on-demand highlights and recent episodes of Washington Journal and Q&A. It also carries C-SPAN Radio and podcasts, which is useful when you’re driving.
However, one limitation stands out. According to the App Store listing, livestreams of the three TV networks are “limited to authenticated cable and satellite TV customers.” In other words, the app shows a lot for free, but not the 24-hour channel feeds.
How to unlock the full C-SPAN live stream with a TV login
If your TV package includes C-SPAN, you can watch all three channels online at no extra cost. C-SPAN calls this TV provider verification, and it takes a couple of minutes:
- On C-SPAN.org, open the TV Networks page and pick your provider from the list.
- Sign in with the username and password from that provider. A MyC-SPAN account won’t work for this step.
- In the C-SPAN Now app, tap More and link your TV provider to unlock the channels there too.
Which services carry the C-SPAN live stream?
For years, cord-cutters had very few options, because the big streaming bundles didn’t carry it. That changed in 2025, after a push from senators of both parties who passed a resolution backing live C-SPAN access on all platforms.
YouTube TV
On December 4, 2025, YouTube TV added C-SPAN, C-SPAN2 and C-SPAN3, following a deal announced on September 3, 2025. YouTube TV is also sponsoring C-SPAN programming for America’s 250th anniversary, which airs during 2026.
Hulu + Live TV
Hulu + Live TV was part of the same September 2025 announcement. Reports at the time of the YouTube TV launch said the channels would reach Hulu + Live TV the following week.
DirecTV Stream and cable
Meanwhile, traditional cable and satellite packages have carried C-SPAN for decades. DirecTV Stream has also carried C-SPAN and C-SPAN2. Since prices and lineups change often, check the provider’s channel list before you subscribe.
Then, once you have one of these services, use its login on C-SPAN.org or in C-SPAN Now as described above. For a full comparison of live TV services, see our guide to watching news without cable.

How to watch a C-SPAN live stream on your TV
The simplest route is the YouTube TV or Hulu + Live TV app on your smart TV or streaming stick, if you subscribe to one. Otherwise, here are the free workarounds that stay within official channels.
Use the C-SPAN YouTube channel
Instead of paying, check C-SPAN’s official YouTube channel, which often streams major live events. Check its Live tab, then open it in the YouTube app on your TV, or cast it from your phone to a Chromecast or Google TV device.
Open C-SPAN.org in a browser
On Fire TV you can open C-SPAN.org in the Silk browser and play the free live events. Alternatively, on a laptop, connect it to the TV with an HDMI cable. Our guide to watching live news on a PC has tips for this setup.
Phones and tablets
C-SPAN Now works well on a phone, but a 2024 test by Cord Cutting Report found casting from the app wasn’t supported. So for big-screen viewing, YouTube or a browser is easier. See also our guide to live news on your phone.
What’s worth watching on C-SPAN?
Floor sessions and hearings are the core, but there’s more. Here are the programs regular viewers mention most:
- Washington Journal: a morning call-in show where guests from different parties take questions from viewers.
- Book TV: author talks and interviews on C-SPAN2 at weekends.
- American History TV: lectures, tours and archival films on C-SPAN3.
- Q&A: long-form interviews, available on demand.
- Campaign coverage: candidate events, debates and speeches, usually shown in full.
Because C-SPAN shows events without anchors weighing in, many viewers use it next to a cable news channel. For example, on election night you might follow results elsewhere and switch to C-SPAN for full speeches. Our midterm election results guide lists the other networks’ plans.
Tips for following a C-SPAN live stream of a hearing or vote
A little planning helps, because congressional schedules shift often. These habits make it easier to catch the moment you care about:
- Check the schedule first. C-SPAN.org lists the day’s live events, and hearings can be postponed or moved at short notice.
- Expect delays. Floor sessions don’t have fixed end times, and a vote can stay open far longer than planned.
- Use the archive. If you miss a speech, the free video library usually has it soon after, so you can jump straight to the part you need.
- Switch to audio. When you can’t watch a screen, C-SPAN Radio and the audio in C-SPAN Now let you keep listening.
- Pick the right channel. Senate business is on C-SPAN2 and House business is on C-SPAN, so check which chamber is in session before you tune in.
Also remember that the full channel feeds need a TV login, while individual events are usually free. In practice, that means most big moments, such as a high-profile hearing, can be watched at no cost on the website or in the app.
Can I watch the C-SPAN live stream outside the US?
In that case, start with the free events on C-SPAN.org and the YouTube channel. C-SPAN’s own help page doesn’t describe country limits for those free streams, but the full channel feeds need a US TV provider login.
