The easiest way to watch ABC News Australia live from the US, UK or Europe is the channel’s official live stream on YouTube, which the ABC itself points overseas viewers to. Inside Australia, the same channel is free on ABC iview, the ABC NEWS app, the ABC News website and free-to-air channel 24. This guide covers every official option, what’s blocked overseas, and when the main programs air in your time zone.
Key facts (as of October 2026)
- ABC News is the 24-hour news channel of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation; it launched as ABC News 24 on July 22, 2010.
- ABC iview live streams work only inside Australia, and watching live on the iview apps needs a free ABC Account.
- Outside Australia, the ABC directs viewers to its YouTube live stream; there is no ABC News channel on free streaming services such as Pluto TV or Samsung TV Plus.
What is ABC News Australia?
ABC News is the rolling news channel of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the country’s public broadcaster. It launched in July 2010 as ABC News 24 and relaunched under the single ABC News brand in April 2017. Most programs come from the ABC’s Sydney headquarters in Ultimo, with some shows made in Melbourne.
Don’t confuse it with ABC News in the US. The American network belongs to Disney and runs its own free channel, ABC News Live; our ABC News Live guide covers that one. Overseas viewers usually search for “ABC News Australia” to find the right channel, and that’s the name the ABC tells them to use on YouTube.
How to watch ABC News Australia live outside Australia
For viewers in the US, UK and Europe, YouTube is the main official route. The ABC’s help pages tell overseas viewers to search YouTube for “ABC News Australia live” to find the channel’s live feed. The ABC News Australia channel describes a 24-hour live stream, and the ABC’s 2025 election guide for overseas audiences also pointed people there.
| Option | Works outside Australia? | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube live stream | Yes | Free | Official channel: ABC News (Australia) |
| ABC iview website | Partly | Free with an ABC Account | A “curated range” of programs only; no live channel |
| ABC iview app | No | Free | Australia only, because of rights agreements |
| ABC Australia (international channel) | Asia-Pacific only | Via local pay TV | Not offered in the US, UK or Europe |
Watching the YouTube stream on a TV
On a smart TV, Roku, Fire TV or Apple TV, open the YouTube app and search for “ABC News Australia live.” Make sure the channel name shows ABC News (Australia), not the US ABC News. Then press play. You can also cast it from your phone with the YouTube app.
What about ABC iview overseas?
The iview apps work only in Australia. On the iview website, the ABC offers overseas viewers a curated range of programs with a free ABC Account, but live channels aren’t part of it. We don’t recommend VPNs or other workarounds to reach the Australian service.
Coming soon: the NewsLive streaming app. We’re building one subscription for live international news on Android, Roku, Fire TV and desktop. The service is under development — follow NewsLive for launch updates.
How to watch ABC News Australia live inside Australia
Australians have four official free ways to watch. The ABC lists all of them on its help pages.
- Free-to-air TV: channel 24 on any TV with an antenna. It returned to HD broadcasting in 2025.
- ABC iview: the live channel is in the Live section. You need a free ABC Account to watch live in the iview TV and mobile apps.
- ABC NEWS app: the live stream sits alongside news stories and alerts.
- ABC News website: the live player runs on desktop and mobile browsers.
iview logins have been mandatory since March 15, 2022. So if the stream asks you to sign in, create the free account and it will start playing.
Does ABC Australia reach the US or Europe?
No. ABC Australia is the ABC’s international TV service, and it’s built for Asia and the Pacific. The ABC lists carriage through local pay-TV and telecom providers in about 21 Asian markets, including India, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and the Philippines. Its official “ways to watch” page doesn’t mention the US, UK or Europe.
The ABC did expand into free streaming channels in July 2026, but only with entertainment. It launched four free channels on LG Channels, for LG smart TVs: ABC Entertains, ABC Everyday, ABC Factual and ABC Kids. The US gets Entertains and Kids, while the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands and the Nordics get all four. None of them is a news channel.
How to follow big Australian news events from abroad
Elections, budgets and natural disasters are when overseas viewers most want the ABC. During the 2025 federal election, the ABC published a guide for people outside Australia and pointed them to its YouTube channel for live coverage. That’s the pattern to expect for future big events too.
A few practical tips help on the night:
- Open the stream early. Big events draw large audiences, so start the YouTube stream a few minutes before coverage begins.
- Turn on notifications. Subscribe to the ABC News (Australia) YouTube channel and switch on alerts, so you see when special live coverage starts.
- Use the website for text updates. The ABC News website runs live blogs that work anywhere, which is handy if you can’t watch video at work.
- Watch the clock. Australian prime time falls overnight in the US, so catching up on clips the next day is often more practical than watching live.
Also, Australians travelling overseas should remember that their iview app will stop playing live channels as soon as they leave the country. Therefore, set up YouTube on your phone before you fly.
When can I watch ABC News Australia live in my time zone?
Sydney is far ahead of Europe and the US, so Australian evening news lands in the European morning and the American night. Eastern Australia is on daylight time (AEDT, UTC+11) until April 5, 2027.
| Program (Sydney time) | UK (GMT) | US Eastern (from November 1, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| News Breakfast, 6 a.m. weekdays | 7 p.m. the previous day | 2 p.m. the previous day |
| Evening news, 7 p.m. | 8 a.m. | 3 a.m. |
| Insiders, 9 a.m. Sunday | 10 p.m. Saturday | 5 p.m. Saturday |
Times are approximate and shift when clocks change in either country, so check the ABC’s TV guide before tuning in. Until US clocks go back on November 1, 2026, Eastern Time is one hour later than shown.
How does it compare with other English-language world news?
ABC News Australia is strongest on Australia, Asia and the Pacific. For other regions, these channels are also easy to watch from Europe or the US:
- BBC News, for UK and global coverage
- Al Jazeera English, for the Middle East and the Global South
- DW News, for Germany and Europe
In short, if you’re an Australian abroad or you follow Asia-Pacific news closely, the ABC’s YouTube stream is the best free option. For more networks, see our A to Z channel list or the Watch Abroad guides.
