The easiest BBC News live stream right now is free: since October 2026 the BBC News channel simulcasts 24/7 on the official BBC News YouTube channel for viewers in the UK and the US. In the UK you can also watch on BBC iPlayer or Freeview with a TV Licence. In the US, the channel also runs free on several ad-supported streaming services, and it is included in the paid BBC.com and BBC app subscription. Here is how each option works, what it costs as of October 2026, and which one suits you.
Key facts (as of October 2026)
- Since October 2026 the BBC News channel streams 24/7 free on the official BBC News YouTube channel in the UK and US.
- In the UK it is on BBC iPlayer and Freeview 231 (a TV Licence is required for live TV).
- In the US it is free on several ad-supported services and included in the BBC.com subscription.
What “BBC News” means in 2026
There used to be two BBC rolling news channels. BBC News (once BBC News 24, launched in November 1997) served the UK, while BBC World News served international viewers. On 3 April 2023 the BBC merged them into a single channel called BBC News.
That shared schedule means the BBC News live stream looks much the same in most countries.
Most of the schedule is now shared worldwide. The UK feed is free-to-air and funded by the licence fee, and it drops out of the shared schedule for UK-only bulletins and programmes. The international feed is run commercially by BBC Studios and carries advertising. So a viewer in London and a viewer in Chicago see largely the same journalism, with some differences in the schedule.
The channel is based at Broadcasting House in central London. Overnight hours (UK time) are presented from Washington, D.C. and Singapore, which is how it stays live around the clock.

Free BBC News live stream on YouTube (UK and US)
On 15 October 2026 the BBC began streaming the BBC News channel live on its official BBC News YouTube channel for audiences in the UK and the US. According to YouTube’s announcement, this followed earlier live launches in Australia, Kenya, Nigeria and Poland. The BBC described the UK and US rollout as a step toward wider availability.
This is the simplest route for most people. You can watch in a browser, on the YouTube app for phones, or on any smart TV or streaming stick with YouTube installed. Look for the live video on the official BBC News channel, which carries YouTube’s verification badge, rather than re-uploads from other accounts.
One UK-specific catch: TV Licensing says you need a licence to watch any channel live as it is broadcast, and it names YouTube among the services this applies to. Free to stream does not mean licence-free in the UK.
BBC News live stream in the UK: iPlayer and regular TV
UK viewers can open the BBC News channel live inside BBC iPlayer. iPlayer requires a TV Licence for both live and on-demand viewing. The live stream also appears on the BBC News website and app inside the UK.
On traditional TV, BBC News sits on Freeview channel 231 in standard definition. The HD version left Freeview in June 2022, but HD remains on Freesat 200, Sky 503 and Virgin Media 601. Channel numbers occasionally move, so check your provider’s guide if it is not where you expect.
BBC News live stream in the US: free streaming services
In March 2024 the BBC and AMC Networks (its US partner through BBC America) put the BBC News channel on a group of free ad-supported streaming services. At launch, the list was Pluto TV, Samsung TV Plus, Xumo Play, VIZIO WatchFree+, Sling Freestream and Plex.
These services cost nothing and don’t need a cable login. Many are built into smart TVs: Samsung TV Plus comes on Samsung sets, and VIZIO WatchFree+ on VIZIO TVs. Others, like Pluto TV and Plex, have apps for Roku, Fire TV, Android TV, phones and browsers. Channel line-ups on free services change without much notice, so search the guide for “BBC News” before you rely on one.
In the US: the paid BBC subscription
In mid-2025 the BBC started charging US readers for most of the news content on BBC.com. In January 2026 it extended the pay model to the BBC app. The subscription includes the 24/7 livestream of the BBC News channel, full-length reporting and BBC documentaries.
The BBC app is published by BBC Studios Distribution on the App Store. As of October 2026 its listing shows a monthly plan at $8.99 and an annual plan at $89.99. Earlier coverage reported an annual price of $49.99 at launch, so prices have shifted. Check the current price in the app or on BBC.com before you subscribe. Now that the live channel streams free on YouTube in the US, the subscription makes most sense if you also want unlimited articles and documentaries.
Pay TV and live TV services
The international BBC News feed is also sold to cable, satellite and live TV streaming providers in many countries. Availability varies by country and package, so check with your local provider. Flagship programmes to know
The merged channel carries a mix of rolling news and named programmes. A few long-running ones are worth knowing, but timings change around breaking news and special coverage. Check the live guide in your app before tuning in.
These programmes are the highlights of the BBC News live stream through the day.
- The Context: the channel’s main evening analysis show, presented by Christian Fraser. It airs weeknights from 8pm to 10pm UK time, which is usually 3pm to 5pm Eastern Time. Katty Kay and Sumi Somaskanda co-present at times from Washington, and John Simpson hosts a Friday segment, The Week with John Simpson.
- Newsday: the Asia-focused morning program presented live from Singapore.
- Business Today: business and markets news.
- BBC News Now and Verified Live: two formats launched in May 2023. Verified Live focuses on checking video and claims from breaking stories.
- Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg: the BBC’s Sunday morning political interview program.
Because the UK feed opts out for some domestic programmes, viewers outside Britain may see different shows in certain slots. That is normal, not a problem with your stream.
