NewsNation in brief
NewsNation is a national cable news network owned by Nexstar Media Group, which also owns or partners with about 200 local TV stations. It is based in Chicago. The channel has a longer history than its name suggests:
- 1978: The channel starts life as the national feed of Chicago’s WGN-TV, later known as WGN America.
- September 1, 2020: WGN America launches a three-hour primetime newscast called NewsNation.
- March 1, 2021: The whole channel is renamed NewsNation.
- April 24, 2023: Weekday programming becomes all news.
- June 1, 2024: Weekends follow, and NewsNation becomes a 24/7 news network.
Nexstar has positioned NewsNation as a fact-focused alternative to the big three cable news networks, CNN, Fox News and MS NOW (formerly MSNBC). Its primetime line-up mixes straight news with hosted talk shows, and in 2025 and 2026 it added several hosts who previously worked at Fox News. As with any news network, viewers on different sides of politics judge its balance differently. This guide sticks to how to watch it.

Cable and satellite
Most large cable and satellite companies carry NewsNation, though the channel number depends on your provider and area. NewsNation’s website has a Channel Finder that looks up providers by ZIP code. Nexstar has said the network reaches around 70 million US TV households.
Live TV streaming services
If you have cut the cord, a live TV streaming service is the most direct way to get the full NewsNation channel. Nexstar has named YouTube TV, Hulu, DirecTV Stream, Fubo and Sling among the streaming services that carry it.
- YouTube TV: NewsNation is in the main line-up. The base plan was $82.99 a month as of mid-2026. It also carries Fox News, CNN and MS NOW, which is handy if you watch several networks.
- Sling TV: Usually the cheaper route, but channels are split across packages. Check that NewsNation is in the package you pick.
- Fubo, Hulu + Live TV and DirecTV Stream: These are larger bundles that are priced more like cable. Confirm the line-up for your ZIP code before you sign up.
Line-ups and prices change, so check the current channel list on the provider’s site. If you are deciding between them, our guide to watching news without cable compares the main services side by side.
The NewsNation app and website
The NewsNation app is free to download. It runs on iPhone and Android phones, and its TV versions launched in 2023 on Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV and Samsung smart TVs.
Without signing in, the app gives you on-demand clips and highlights from recent shows. To watch live, sign in with your cable, satellite or streaming TV provider. You then get the same live broadcast as on your TV at home. NewsNation says the live stream works anywhere in the US, so it also works when you travel.
Setting it up on a TV takes a couple of minutes:
- Open your TV’s app store and search for “NewsNation.”
- Install the app and open it.
- Choose to sign in and pick your TV provider.
- Follow the on-screen code to link your account on a phone or computer.
Device-specific tips are in our guides to news channels on Roku and live news on Fire TV.

Is there a free NewsNation live stream?
Not a full one. At times NewsNation has offered free live access to big events and has put some programming on its website without a login. Those windows have been temporary. Today the free option is the on-demand material in the app and on NewsNationNow.com, plus the clips NewsNation posts on its social channels.
If you want free live news in general, other networks have permanent free streams. Our comparison of free vs paid news streaming lists the best ones.
The NewsNation schedule
NewsNation’s daytime hours are mostly rolling news. The evening is built around hosted shows. The line-up below is based on NewsNation’s announced changes in 2025 and January 2026. Times are Eastern, and schedules change, so check NewsNation’s own listings before you tune in.
| Time (ET) | Show | Host |
|---|---|---|
| 3–6 p.m. | Afternoon newscast | Connell McShane |
| 7 p.m. | Elizabeth Vargas Reports | Elizabeth Vargas |
| 8 p.m. | Cuomo | Chris Cuomo |
| 9 p.m. | On Balance with Leland Vittert | Leland Vittert |
| 10 p.m. | Katie Pavlich Tonight | Katie Pavlich |
| 11 p.m. | Jesse Weber Live | Jesse Weber |
Katie Pavlich and Jesse Weber both started their shows on January 19, 2026. Pavlich took over the 10 p.m. hour after Ashleigh Banfield ended her nightly show. Earlier, in February 2025, Leland Vittert moved into the slot that Dan Abrams had held.
A tip for big news nights
On election nights and other major events, network schedules shift and special coverage often replaces the regular shows. If you are planning around a specific host, check the schedule in the NewsNation app on the day.
Watching NewsNation outside the United States
NewsNation is built for US viewers. Its live stream is tied to US TV subscriptions, and it does not sell a separate international subscription as of October 2026. The app’s on-demand clips may be available in some countries, but we could not confirm a full live option abroad.
If you are an American living overseas, the practical options are networks that do sell international access. CNN All Access, for example, launched in the UK and Canada in October 2026. Our guide to watching US news channels abroad explains what works country by country. We do not recommend VPNs or other ways around a service’s regional rules.
NewsNation compared with the big three
| Network | Owner | Free live stream? | Standalone subscription? |

| CNN | Skydance (since October 2026) | No | Yes, CNN All Access |
